Lake Temagami Fishing and Area Lakes
Baits You Might Want To Try
Walleye - live leeches
fished on slip-sinker jigs; crawlers on crawler 'harnesses' work well, too.
Smallmouth Bass - twisted
tail jigs bounced over rocky drop-offs.
Largemouth Bass - surface
plugs, or poppers on warm, calm, summer days.
Northern Pike - bronze and
red-white spoons.
Muskellunge - surface
plugs.
Yellow Perch - tiny
feathered jigs with red worm.
Lake Trout - light weight
spoons (trolled).
Brook Trout - try
spinners, or flies for the skilled flycaster.
Live bait, although messy, hard
to care for, and difficult to fish, generally works best. 'Tough-to-catch'
species such as walleye and smallmouth bass are those that most often require
live bait. However, even these species will fall for the right combination of
bait and presentation. |

Northern Pike Fishing
Northern Pike generally prefer
shallow weed areas. They live by eating other fish, and lie in wait for food
near underwater obstructions. In spring and fall, fish along weed beds in
shallow bays, off points, and on sand bars dropping into deeper water, or slow
or quiet waters behind obstructions such as log jams or fallen trees.
Pike will strike all kinds of
artificial lures, either cast or trolled; the red and white Dardevle is one of
the most popular. In summer still-fish in deeper water, near submerged weed
beds, using large minnows and suckers 3 to 10 inches long. Don't set the hook
till the fish runs with the bait, and carry long-nosed pliers to remove
swallowed hooks; those teeth are sharp!
For summer trolling move slowly
past sunken weed beds, using live bait, wobbling spoons, or deep-running plugs.
Northerns strike best in early morning and after 4 p.m.; also in midday when
it's overcast or windy.
Medium to heavy casting and
spinning rods are used with 10-to-12-pound monofilament for spinning. Use a
swiveled steel leader or heavy nylon leaders placed just ahead of the bait.

Yellow Perch Fishing
Yellow Perch are perhaps the most
frequently caught sport fish in northern Ontario. There is no closed season or
size limit, and they are very tasty. Perch are school-running fish, and you
should drift or troll and try various places and depths of water until you
begin to catch them.
Spring and fall, perch favor
shallow water (4 to 8 feet deep) and will bite all day long. During the rest of
the year they are found in deeper water and bite best in morning and evening.
They do not normally feed at night.
Preferred tackle includes a
sinker placed on the bottom end of the line and two hooks just above, spaced
about 18 inches apart. Two-to-10-pound test monofilament is standard, and hooks
should be No. 6 to No. 8. Minnows 1 to 3 inches long and very small crayfish
(or pieces of crayfish tail) are preferred bait, but worms, night crawlers,
grasshoppers, crickets and wigglers are also good at times.
Perch do not normally take flies
or artificial lures, although small spinners are sometimes attached ahead of
natural bait to attract these fish. If you don't take any fish in 10 to 15
minutes, move. If catching only small perch, move or fish deeper. Perch can be
very delicate biters, so watch closely, set the hook firmly, and keep a steady
pressure on the line as you pull them in. Worthwhile keepers average 7 to 10
inches in length.

Walleye Fishing
To find Walleyes, look for
submerged bars and deep rock areas close to shore. Fish close to points or
river mouths, in shallow water during spring and fall and in deeper water
during summer. The best fishing times are early morning, late afternoon,
evening and up until midnight. Dark or windy days are also good. Night is best
in summer. Walleyes are school-running and range widely over a lake.
Best fishing methods include
jigging, drifting or trolling over likely spots. Walleyes are bottom huggers,
and it is usually necessary to get the bait right down to bottom to
catch them, whether the water is 6 or 30 feet deep. If you get one fish, it is
likely there are more at the same spot.
Preferred natural baits are
minnows and night crawlers. Night crawlers on a harness or a minnow on a jig
make excellent Walleye baits.
Artificials such as Rapalas,
Flatfish, Pikey Minnows, River Runts, Lazy Ikes or similar baits also are good
Walleye getters when fished deep.
Medium-action spinning or casting
rods rigged with 6-to-8 pound test line are good all-around tackle for
Walleyes. When using live bait, No. 2 to No. 2/0 hooks are recommended.

Walleye Fishing Tips and Techniques
by Capt. Bob Summers
The following Information is provided to
improve your Walleye fishing techniques.
Jigs fishing for
Walleye
Jig fishing is the oldies and one
of the best techniques ever. When mastered properly it will out produce most
other methods. On our lake. It is used mostly in the spring during the
spawn, However it will take fish all year. Jigs come in many sizes, colors
and styles. I have found it is hard to beat a Yellow Chartreuse, Round Head
Jig. Other colors such as Green, white, red, orange also work. Sizes range
from 1/16 ounce, to one or more ounces. What is the best size to use? First
some basics Walleye almost always hit a Jig when it is dropping. So the next
Issue is, how to work a Jig? A jig must be presented in a pattern that keeps it
in contact with the bottom but yet jumps up form the bottom. To achieve this a
hopping motion, cast the Jig parallel to the boat, off the stern or bow, or
downwind. Let it sink to the bottom. Then start a hopping motion using ONLY
your wrist. Not your arm. Make the Jig hop about 6 to 12 inches up off the
bottom. It will be necessary to retrieve in between hops, just to keep some of
the slack out and keep in contact with the Jig. Make sure the line goes
slack after each hop. This is when the Walleye suck the Jig into It's mouth.
This motion is some what like a whipping motion but, with only your wrist. The
Jigging motion should occur in about one second intervals. Each time snapping
it from the bottom. The size of the Jig depends on a couple of things.
Water depth and drift speed of your boat. The lighter you can go on your Jig
weight the better. But is must contact the bottom each time, you Jig or hop the
lure. Twister Tails: Most all of them work well, but prefer Berkley Power
Grubs. They have added scent and The fish will hold on to it longer. Again many
sizes and colors to chose from. I prefer the 2 inch Twister Tail for Jigs 1/4
ounce and 3 inch for Jigs from 3/8 up to 5/8 ounce. It is also common
practice to tip the Jig with a minnow or a small piece of night Crawler. The
best way to hook your minnow is from under the head up thru the middle of it
head. It will stay on much better. It is better not to use big minnows. 1
1/2 to 2 inches work best. Other wise the Walleye will likely rip it off.
Years ago we did not use bait on the Jig but, some where we managed to
spoil them. You can still catch many Walleye without the minnow or crawler but
it dose work better when the fish are being picky. Most often you will be
fishing water depths less the ten feet during the spring, then deeper as the
year goes on into summer. Deep water jigging is mostly vertical with up to
1 ounce jigs. Casting will not do much under these conditions. Just drop it to
the bottom and gently hop it. NEVER DRAG A JIG! NEVER! It will most likely
get snagged in the rocks and Walleye will ignore it. Good luck and good
fishing. Watch for more fishing tips and techniques soon. Capt. Bob Summers
